Why this DNC Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: An Analysis.

This action from the DNC to suppress the publication of its own autopsy report concerning the 2024 election appears stunning yet not surprising. Resistant to unpleasant candor, the DNC behaves more like a communications shop rather than a political organization devoted to building local power to secure victories.

A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique

Reluctant to break with the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the DNC has remained under that legacy throughout this past year. Publishing the findings would have indicated whether party leaders actually want to foster open debate about the missteps that enabled the former president to win re-election. Yet, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there's nothing to understand from the tragic debacle of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a rationale which was presented for withholding the report.

Key Issues an Analysis Would Have Examined

Any valuable post-mortem with any value would not dodge key points of failure. These include:

  • Electoral Disengagement: Failing to retain among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive in the close 2024 election.
  • The Insistence to Seek Re-election: The determined choice by a party leader to stay in the race, alongside a very late exit, is viewed as denying Democratic voters of open primaries.
  • Abandoning the Working-Class Base: While facing rising costs, the electoral effort is criticized for bowing to corporate donors' interests and not managing to confront the impact of corporate greed.
  • The Gaza Impact: The failure to shift a stance regarding the situation in Gaza allegedly caused driving away key demographic groups, particularly with young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Support: Polling data demonstrates a huge drop-off of support for the party among voters aged 18-29.

A History of Evasion

This refusal fits a recurring tendency to avoid uncomfortable facts. It recalls a dynamic in which virtually every Democratic officeholder in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's decision for seeking another term until a disastrous public debate performance compelled an exit.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers of Democratic voters had been consistently telling pollsters of their opposition to that candidate to run again.

Financial Concerns

A substantive report would also probe matters regarding campaign spending, such as the amounts went to party strategists and media firms during an electoral effort which expended an enormous sum over a few months.

The Broader Problem

Ultimately, the secrecy regarding the analysis highlights an allegiance to party leaders that oversaw an unsuccessful electoral effort. The implication for rank-and-file members – including millions of loyal volunteers – is that they cannot be trusted to see what the insiders say they discovered based on hundreds of interviews based on feedback from all states.

A political entity incapable to critically review its mistakes is unlikely to climb out of the rut that ended up being so helpful to the winning candidate.
