Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
