On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
