It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and bringing audiences to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang
The preview reveals the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser avoids is why Woody is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the badge pinned to her outfit.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
