At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
